Recently, we’ve been coming across Marketing teams with more gaps in them than a holey vest. A finely-tuned machine, you only really need a couple of key team members to jump ship and suddenly the game is changed.
We’re hearing a similar story on our travels. Projects are put on hold indefinitely. Directors are having to fight fires and get involved in the nitty gritty, putting aside strategy to deal with the here and now. Managers and Executives are having to caretake another couple of sectors for a while, increasing an already sizeable workload. To compound the problem, our contacts tell us that they struggle to find the right calibre of candidate and this is forcing many firms to muddle along for months.
All understandable of course, but is it sustainable? We think not. Eventually, something (or someone!) will snap. Big opportunities to win business will be missed because there are not enough hours in the day to think laterally. And partners will put it down to a lack of skill and vision, not a lack of manpower.
